Kalmon E. “Ernie” Gronas, 89, of Lakeview, OH passed away early Thursday morning, April 24, 2025, at his home.
Kalmon was born on June 29, 1935, in Lima, OH, a son of the late Kalmon C. Gronas and Helen V. (King) Solomon. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah Schoonover, a son, Donald Gronas, and two brothers, Michael Daniels, and Joseph Gronas.
Ernie married Barb Long at St. John’s Church in Lima on January 11, 1958, and she survives. He is also survived by three children, Dennis (Becky) Gronas, and Diann (Kevin) Canavan, both of Lima, and Denise (Jerry) Hall of Uniopolis, OH, ten grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, a brother, Robert (Sharon) Daniels of Lima, and a son-in-law, Mike Schoonover of Lima.
Ernie was a 1954 graduate of St. John Catholic School in Lima. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. Ernie retired from the City of Lima in 1994 as Assistant City Planner after 30 years of service to the city. He was a member of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Russells Point, OH, and a member of Doyle R. Miller Amvets Post #39 in Lakeview. Ernie was also a Past Commander of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He loved working in his yard, woodworking in his workshop and fishing.
Reverend Shawn Landenwitch will begin a Memorial Mass at noon, Wednesday, April 30, at St. Mary of the Woods Church, 464 Madison Ave, Russells Point, with visiting from 11 a.m. to noon at the church. Inurnment will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church.
