Deputies from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office conducted a felony traffic stop Sunday, Jan. 26, near State Route 117 and County Road 96 outside Huntsville.

Hunter Burris, 33, of Russells Point, was stopped at approximately 11:45 p.m. for operating a vehicle without a visible license plate.

Upon stopping the vehicle, officers observed a temporary plate in the rear window that was not easily visible or legible. Burris displayed signs of extreme nervousness during the stop, prompting deputies to conduct a further investigation. A background check revealed Burris had a history of felony drug charges and was under Adult Parole Authority supervision.

During a pat-down for weapons, deputies discovered a clear plastic baggie containing a crystal-like substance in Burris’ pocket. The substance, later identified as methamphetamine, weighed approximately 66.15 grams and tested positive during a preliminary field test. A small knife was also found in the same pocket.

A search of the vehicle uncovered additional suspected narcotics, including a small baggie of suspected fentanyl weighing about 1.4 grams and half a Xanax pill, which Burris admitted was not prescribed to him.

Burris claimed the methamphetamine was given to him as repayment for a debt but denied selling drugs. He admitted to using fentanyl since his release from prison in December 2024. Deputies noted that Burris had engaged in conversations about selling drugs and identified his potential pricing structure for methamphetamine during the investigation.

Burris was transported to the Logan County Jail, where he was lodged on a second-degree felony charge for possession of methamphetamine. Additional charges for possession of fentanyl and Xanax are pending further analysis.

His vehicle was towed and held for evidence, while his phone was seized for investigative purposes regarding possible drug trafficking.
