Craig Fry, 52, of Huntsville was arrested Thursday, Dec. 19, on multiple charges including including operating a vehicle under the influence, improper handling of a firearm and open container violations following a traffic stop executed by deputies from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office.
A deputy on patrol traveling westbound on U.S. Route 33 near State Route 540 observed a red Ford F-150 driving erratically at approximately 9:38 p.m. The truck veered over lane markings multiple times, prompting a traffic stop. Despite the deputy activating lights and sirens, the driver, later identified as Fry, continued driving before pulling over near the intersection of U.S. 33 and SR 540.
Upon approaching the vehicle, deputies noticed Fry’s bloodshot, glassy eyes and detected the odor of alcohol. When questioned, Fry admitted to consuming alcohol after work. He reported that he had a concealed firearm in the vehicle, and was told not to reach for it.
Fry exhibited signs of impairment, including slurred speech and difficulty unlocking his vehicle door. He admitted to consuming six alcoholic beverages earlier in the evening. Field sobriety tests were conducted, during which Fry struggled to follow instructions and maintain balance.
After failing the tests, Fry was placed under arrest for OVI. A search of his vehicle turned up two firearms—a Glock 29 and a Smith & Wesson Shield—along with two open containers of Miller Lite, a mixed alcoholic beverage and additional unopened cases of alcohol.
Fry consented to a breathalyzer test. The results showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.202, more than double the legal limit.
He was lodged at the Logan County Jail on charges of OVI, improper handling of a firearm, and open container violations.
