Semi driver passes away following Sunday’s S.R. 117 crash

The driver of a semi tractor-trailer that struck a residence in the 16000 block of State Route 117 in Hardin County on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 3, reportedly passed away Monday, Nov. 4.

Gary Lee Campbell, 67, of Belle Center, died Monday at Lima Memorial Hospital, according to his obituary posted on Jennings Farley & Seeley Funeral Home’s website.

He was transported by Alger EMS to Lima Memorial Hospital Sunday for treatment of suspected serious injuries after the semi struck the home around 2 p.m., deputies of the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office previously reported.

Deputies said Campbell was operating a northbound 2008 Volvo 240 Series semi on S.R. 117 near County Road 180 when he went into the southbound lane of S.R. 117 and went off the left side of the road.

Deputies said the semi struck a ditch and continued into a yard along S.R. 117 where it grazed a tree, then struck the residence.

No injuries were reported for occupants of the residence.

The semi driver was reportedly in and out of consciousness at the scene. It is not known if he was wearing a seat belt.

Damage to the semi, owned by Heinz Farms Partnership of Lakeview, was heavy.
