A new mayor was sworn in Monday, Oct. 7, during a regular meeting of the Russells Point council.
John Huffman, who had served as council president, was sworn in Monday to replace outgoing Mayor Robin Reames.
Reames, who announced her retirement last month, steps down after 12 years of service. Huffman will complete her term through 2025, and the council will now work to fill Huffman’s vacant seat in the coming weeks.
Having served since 2012, Reames is one the longest-serving mayors in the village’s history. With Huffman assuming her duties, the council will focus on filling the now-vacant council seat in the coming weeks.
Throughout her time in office, Reames helped lead several significant projects that have improved Russells Point. Among them, the creation of the John and Mary Rudolph Nature Center, a space that has become one of the most popular public places in the community.
She also helped to oversee the removal of numerous dilapidated structures that were health hazards, improving the safety and appearance of the village.
In addition, road resurfacing projects during her time saw nearly 78% of the village’s streets improved. Reames said the emphasis that the village placed on securing grant funding was critical in achieving many of those projects during 12 years.
Among the biggest achievements during her tenure is ongoing, Reames said. The current $4.1 million project to replace, repair and install new storm water infrastructure in various areas throughout the village is the largest infrastructure project in the village’s history, she said.
She also said that Huffman was capable in leading the village forward and that she is confident he will succeed in helping to keep the village moving forward.
