One contestant is running for 2023 Logan County Fair queen this year, while five young ladies are vying for Logan County Fair princess in the annual royalty contest, which begins at 5:15 p.m. Sunday, July 9, at the show arena.
The contest follows the fair’s opening ceremony, which kicks off at 5 p.m.
Shyanne McClintick is the lone queen candidate this year. A daughter of Daric and Shannon McClintick, the West Liberty-Salem High School junior and honor roll student aspires to be a large animal veterinarian after high school.
Formerly a Logan County Fair princess, Shyanne has served in a number of leadership roles, including as a FFA secretary, Riverside Hustlers 4-H secretary, Logan County Junior Board secretary, camp counselor and JV cheer captain.
She also was part of the Logan County state livestock judging team for 2022-2023. Her team went to the state finals for judging and ranked fourth overall and as an individual, she placed 14th. At the state fair, the Logan County team placed sixth overall.
During the past two years, the queen contestant has traveled to the state and National FFA convention.
Since she joined 4-H, Shyanne has shown hogs and goats, along with fancy chickens, which have garnered top awards.
Being involved with livestock and helping with her family’s business of raising, showing and selling goats, along with participating in football and basketball cheerleading and varsity softball at her school has taught her to balance her activities, she noted in her essay.
Shyanne said through her various activities and events, “I have gained many qualities that would help me be a strong leader and good representative for the Logan County Fair….
“Qualities of being responsible and able to step out of your comfort zone to help others are so important because it can allow you to meet new people and have so many different new experiences.”
Here’s a look at the princess candidates:
• Brylee Buyer of West Mansfield, an incoming Benjamin Logan Middle School eighth-grader, is a daughter of Ashley Roseburrogh and Bryan Buyer. She has served as the captain of her soccer team and participates in youth group, vacation Bible school and 4-H and has received several awards at the fair, including for showmanship and agriculture.
If she is selected as fair princess she said she would enjoy “serving as a role model for younger age groups and most importantly, creating lifelong memories.”
• An upcoming Benjamin Logan High School sophomore, Kayley Knox is a daughter of Alicia and John Knox of Belle Center. She has served as an FFA officer, ran for student council, and is a member of the honor band and Key Club. She also received her Greenhand Degree.
“I normally am pretty shy and recently, I have been trying to step out of my comfort zone. When I try something, I do not give up,” she said describing what she would learn as fair princess.
• Savannah McClintick of Cable, an incoming West Liberty-Salem Middle School eighth-grader, has served on student council, yearbook president, captain for varsity cheerleading, softball team captain and as a goat and pig ambassador and participates in 4-H. She is a daughter of Daric and Shannon McClintick and has received showmanship and other awards at the fair as well.
“I would like to experience the ability to encourage the youth to join not only 4-H, but also encourage them to try new things, like the Logan County royalty,” she said in her fair essay.
• Nahla Payne of Belle Center is an upcoming Benjamin Logan Middle School eighth-grader. A daughter of Angel and Jeremy Payne, she has received grand champion and reserve awards with her goats at the Logan County Fair, along with serving as a historian at her 4-H club, and she also rides horses and participates in softball and track.
“I would like to meet new people and teach them about 4-H because it’s more than just bringing an animal to the fair and getting money,” she said in her essay.
• Ealise Simpson-Cruz of Huntsville will be a freshman at Indian Lake High School in the fall. A daughter of Erika Narcizo, she served as the treasurer of her 4-H club and was recently honored for her artwork at the Indian Lake Schools grades K-12 show. At the Logan County Fair, she previously has shown ducks, sheep, turkeys, goats and rabbits.
“If I am chosen as Logan County Fair princess, I hope to learn to push myself harder to be the best that I can be, learn the responsibilities of fair princess and to represent the Logan County Fair to the best of my ability.”
