3 injured following crash on city’s south side

Three Springfield residents were transported to Mary Rutan Hospital following a two-vehicle accident near the intersection of south Main Street and Gunntown Road just after 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13.

Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department said Paul W. Martin, 76, of Springfield was operating a 2005 Honda Accord northbound in the right lane of south Main Street near the intersection Gunntown Road at 3:07 p.m.

Martin reportedly drove left of center and nearly hit a vehicle driven by a Champaign County deputy before striking a 2016 Kia driven by Sandra L. Jones, 74, also of Springfield, head on, causing disabling damage to both vehicles.

Both Martin and Jones were suffered unspecified injuries in the accident, as did Robin L. Jones, 73, of Springfield, who was a passenger in the Jones vehicle.

Both occupants of the Jones vehicle were taken to Mary Rutan Hospital by the Bellefontaine EMS, while Macochee EMS transported Martin to MRH following the accident. No updates on the conditions of any of those injured are available.

Martin was cited for failure to drive in marked lanes.

Both vehicles had to be towed from the accident and police cleared the scene in just over one hour.

Apartment incident ends in arrest 

Robert T. Jenkins, 35, of Bellefontaine, was arrested Wednesday, Nov. 12 after he reportedly trashed an apartment in the Whispering Pines Apartments on the east side of the city.

Witnesses said they observed a reportedly intoxicated Jenkins damaging the inside of apartment and notified police. Once officers arrived, Jenkins admitted to damaging the apartment, causing injury to himself when he punched a wall.

As Jenkins did not live at the address, the apartment maintenance employee conducted an inspection and noted the damage, at which time the occupant of the apartment told police they wished to press charges.

Jenkins was arrested at his home at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday on the charge of criminal damaging/endangering before being lodged in the Logan County Jail.
