Two men were arrested by officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department just after 7 p.m. Friday, June 6, following a traffic stop on the east side of the city.

Officers report that while on patrol, they observed a pickup, which was towing a trailer that had on it a blue Mustang, make an illegal turn out of Love’s Truck Stop into the westbound lane of State Route 540. The officers stopped the vehicle, where they identified the driver as Matthew Wayne Friedel, 36, of Fremont, Ind., while the passenger refused to identify himself.

K9 units were called to the scene and following a search of the vehicle, police located two pipes used for smoking methamphetamine as well as a digital scale that contained white, powdery residue.

After cuffing the passenger and placing him the cruiser, he was identified as Austin McCarty, 29, of Toledo. Running his name through dispatch, McCarty was found to have two warrants out for his arrest, one from Michigan and another from Indiana.

During questioning, Friedel reported that he had recently purchased the pickup truck after officers found a license plate in the bed of the truck. The plate returned as being stolen in Indiana.

Following the search and questioning, both Friedel and McCarty were arrested, with Friedel being booked on the charge of receiving stolen property, while McCarty was charged with a parole violation warrant from Michigan and a failure to appear warrant from Indiana. Both defendants were lodged in the Logan County Jail.

The case was forwarded to the Logan County Prosecutor’s Office for further review.
