Lady Chiefs grab D2 district title

The Bellefontaine girls track and field team won its fourth district title in the past six seasons during the final day of the Division II district meet Saturday at Piqua.

The Lady Chiefs had 117 points to take their title. Versailles was second (86), Carroll was third (78) and Benjamin Logan was fourth (76).

Indian Lake finished 11th with 26 points. In the boys meet, Carroll won with 84 points. Springfield Shawnee was second (80), Miami East finished third (73) and Bellefontaine was fourth (68).

Indian Lake finished ninth (37) and Ben Logan was 11th (32.5).

Leading the Lady Chiefs with district titles were Grace Brown in the 1,600 (PR of 5:18.16), Kelsie Snapp in the discus (132-5) and the 400 relay team of Parker Penhorwood, Kylie Adams, Ava Reeves and Callie Shumaker (district record of 49.78).

Taking second for the Lady Chiefs were Lexi Robinson in the discus (132-3), Adams in the 110 hurdles (15.43) and long jump (17-4), Reeves in the 100 (12.65) and 200 (26.02) and Snapp in the shot put (PR of 38-3 1/2).

Finishing in third for BHS were Adams in the 300 hurdles (46.69), Brown in the 3,200 (12:07.55) and Reeves in the long jump (17-2).

“It is a great day to win a district title,” said BHS head coach Ben Davis. “We had contributions from all facets of our team. Winning the title is not taken for granted. Getting the 1-2 and 2-3 punches from discus , 300 hurdles, and long jump was enormous. The wins out of Kelsie, Grace and the 400 relay team were massive.”

Callie Shumaker was fifth for the Chiefs in the 100 hurdles (15.76), while taking sixth was the 3,200 relay team of Kaeleigh Flora, Ella Reier, Kailyn Newman and Brown (PR of 10:33.18).

Adding eighth-place finishes for BHS were the 800 relay team of Jillian Ullom, Ella Reier, Maddie Christman and Claire McDaniel (1:59.81), Newman in the 800 (PR of 2:29.82) and Shumaker in the 200 (27.62).

Tony Stewart powered the BHS boys team by winning the 3,200 (9:56.64). Placing second for the Chieftain boys were Stewart in the 1,600 (4:34.32), Hayden Maus in the 3,200 (10:01.48), the 3,200 relay team of Stewart, Maus, Wes Dunn and Seth Taylor (PR of 8:22.88) and Haiden Manns in the shot put (PR of 53-3 1/4).

Taking fourth and advancing to the regional for the Chiefs were Manns in the discus (153-9) and Kaiden Foulk in the 400 (PR of 51.08). Finishing fifth for BHS were the 800 relay team of Kailyn Organ, Caiden Snapp, Jacob Henry and Foulk (PR of 1:33.20) and Carter Kuhn in the pole vault (12-6).

Taking sixth for the Chiefs were Jake Moreland in the 1,600 (PR of 4:45.88) and the 400 relay team of Jeffrey Smith, Snapp, Henry and Kuhn (45.09).

Adding eighth-place finishes were Ethan Orahood in the 110 hurdles (18.06) and the 1,600 relay team of Zavier May, Blake Loomis, Henry and Foulk (3:44.20). “Tony winning the 3,200 is a tribute to his year round diligence pounding the pavement,” said Davis.

“The heat played a factor with some events. We had PRs out of Manns, Foulk, Moreland, Taylor and the 3200 and 800 relays. The sprint core rallied after losing our sprint leader two weeks ago.”

Henderson has big day for Raiders

Isabel Henderson had a sensational performance to lead Ben Logan’s girls track and field team at the Division II district meet.

Henderson won the 100 hurdles (15.39), won the 300 hurdles (45.44) and won the long jump (17-07.75) to advance to the regionals in those three events.

Also winning a district title for the Raiders was Georgia Bates in the 800. She set a school record with a time of 2:19.10.

Scarlett Elliott advanced to the regionals by finishing third in the pole vault (tied school record of 10-06).

The 800 relay team of Ella Chamberlain, Mya Burrey, Storm LeVan and Abby Vance was fourth (1:50.20) and the 3,200 relay team of Lexi Archer, Bates, Hadley Boysel and Mylee Boysel also was fourth (10:13.86) to advance to regionals.

Abby Vance was fifth in the 100 (12.88), Lauren Hemmelgarn was sixth in the discus (106-05), Vance was seventh in the long jump (16-02), Nora Elliott was seventh in the pole vault (9-06), Kate Gulick was seventh in the 300 hurdles (49.65) and eighth in the 100 hurdles (17.06), the 400 relay team of Avah Miller, Burrey, Vance and Nora Elliott was fifth (52.24) and the 1,600 relay team of Chamberlain, Burrey, Mylee Boysel and Bates finished seventh (4:29.52).

“The team continued the intensity that has been their trademark this season,” said Ben Logan girls head coach Mike Coder. “It has been an outstanding season for the team. School records have been set in the 100-meter hurdles, 100-meter dash and the 800 meter run this season. Also, sisters, Nora and Scarlett Elliott have both managed to vault 10-06 this season and share the school record in the pole vault. With another week to go, we look for other records to fall. The excitement is high for the team. Moving 10 athletes in seven events highlighted the day. Now we will set our sights on preparing for the regional meet.”

For Ben Logan’s boys, the 800 relay team was third (1:31.52) to earn a regional berth. Grahsyn Bailey was fourth in the pole vault (12-6) to also advance to regionals.

The Raiders’ 3,200 relay team of Hughes, Shoopman, Zehner and Rhodes was fifth (8:32.42), the 1,600 relay team was fifth (3:32.71), Carter Buck was sixth in the 110 hurdles (17.27), sixth in the 300 hurdles (43.30) and eighth in the 200 (24.08), Ben Chamberlain was sixth in the 400 (51.73), Evan Carpenter tied for sixth in the pole vault (12-0) and Tyler Shoopman was eighth in the 800 (2:01.78).

Lakers advance five to regionals

Indian Lake’s track and field squads advanced five of their athletes to the regional meet.

For the boys team, Quest Clay was second in the long jump (PR of 20-7.25) and he was fourth in the 100 (11.33).

Brody Parsell was second in the pole vault (PR of 13-6) to earn a regional berth. Placing fifth for the Lakers were Gavin Henry in the 110 hurdles (PR of 15.93) and Noah Shirk in the 300 hurdles (PR of 43.21). Christopher Timms was 6th in the shot put (47-1.5), while seventh-place finishes went to the 400 relay team of Henry, Clay, Heath Wilson and Drake Cosby (45.2) and the 1,600 relay team of Cosby, Shirk, Bryan Mohler and Everett Wischmeyer (3:37.48).
