Mindy L. Gallagher, 33, of 415 N. Detroit St., Bellefontaine, was charged with felonious assault and domestic violence related to an incident at her residence Monday evening, Feb. 6.

Her live-in boyfriend, Justin J. Bates, 33, also was placed under arrest that evening on an unrelated warrant.

Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the residence about 6:30 p.m. by request of the Bellefontaine Police Department, on a report of a domestic dispute.

Upon arrival, Bates reported to deputies that Gallagher had left on foot after the altercation.

He said during an argument, Gallagher grabbed him by his sweatshirt and slammed him against a door, and then picked up a butter knife and allegedly tried to stab him with it. Bates said he was able to get the knife away from her and he bent it and threw it to the ground.

Then, Bates said she grabbed a box cutter and tried to cut his neck with it.
Deputies reportedly observed small cuts and scratches on Bates’ chest, neck and right shoulder blade. They collected the knife and box cutter and placed the items in evidence.

Deputies located Gallagher in the area of north Detroit Street and west High Avenue.

She told deputies that during the argument, Bates had pushed her up against a refrigerator and she admitted to slapping him. She stated that there was no knife involved in the altercation. Deputies observed bruising to her right arm.

Gallagher was placed under arrest on the charges and on a warrant.

Bates was arrested for the warrant, and they were each lodged in the Logan County Jail.

A report will be forwarded to the Logan County Prosecutor’s Office for review and to consider charges for Bates as well, deputies said.
