William J. Conger

58

William J. Conger, 84, of Pickrelltown, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday evening, March 11, 2025, at his home.

Bill was born in Jackson, Ohio, on May 28, 1940, to the late Simon T. and Noka (Waugh) Conger. He married Mary Irene Alspaugh on June 27, 1973, in Bellefontaine, and she preceded him in death on June 5, 2015. Bill was also preceded in death by three sisters, Barbara, Janice, and Ann.

Bill is survived by his son TJ (Jill) Conger of Upper Arlington; 2 grandchildren: Abby Conger and Matthew (Tess Kienzle) Conger; 3 step-sons:  Kevin Johnson, Greg Johnson, and Brent Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.

Bill always kept busy; he worked as a lineman for Conrail Railroad for many years and used his handy trade skills outside of the job to help others his whole life.  If someone needed a fix, with a wide grin and a sparkle in his eye, he would happily proclaim, “Never fear, Billy J. is here!” You could always count on him getting the job done, whether fixing up his granddaughter’s house, mowing a neighbor’s lawn, or changing a tire for a stranger in need on the side of the road.

Bill was resourceful and loved breathing life into discarded items, using his skills to take on the challenge. He genuinely cared for and was an active member of the community. He always checked on others, waved “hello” on his daily walks, brought you over fresh goods from the farmers market, and would show up at your doorstep with a gift he had been tinkering with. He will forever be remembered for his unwavering dependability, infectious laugh, and empathetic spirit.

A memorial service will follow later in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio, 35 Public Square, Nelsonville, OH 45764.
