Weapons charge issued during stop

Passenger Jason Mendiola, 48, of Kenton, was charged with having weapons under disability during a traffic stop Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 28. 

The driver of the vehicle, Guillermo Mata, 50 of Brownsville, Texas, also was served with an active warrant during the stop about 5:50 p.m. 

Officers on patrol in the 400 block of Orchard Island Road and conducted on the vehicle for a turn signal and equipment violation.

Upon making contact with the occupants, the odor of an alcoholic beverage was observed coming from the vehicle. The occupants stated there was nothing illegal inside of the vehicle and consented to a search. During the search, a loaded firearm belonging to Mendiola was located. Several open containers of alcohol were also recovered. 

A criminal history check was conducted on the two occupants. Guillermo was found to have an active warrant for his arrest, while the driver was found to have a violent criminal record that prevented him from possessing a firearm.

Both defendants were taken into custody. 

• Dawn Helton, 33, and Ronald Shoffner, 60, both of 300 Midway Drive, each were served active drug warrants Wednesday, Nov. 27, from a previous Washington Township Police Department traffic stop.

Both defendants were taken into custody and lodged in the Logan County Jail.
