The Logan County Commissioners continued their monthly tradition started earlier this year of honoring a distinguished local veteran in a special flag ceremony.

This month’s honoree, Carmen Scott, also has worked in important leadership roles in the community, providing his innovative ideas to help to shape various aspects of the current educational, manufacturing and transportation landscape.

Thursday, July 20, the commissioners presented Mr. Scott with a flag that flew over the Logan County Courthouse during June.

“We’re very pleased to recognize Mr. Carmen Scott. Mr. Scott served in the United States Army Signal Corps, a branch of the Pentagon during the Vietnam War era from 1963 until 1965,” Commissioner Joe Antram said.

A 1958 graduate of Bellefontaine High School, Mr. Scott also worked for 10 years at the Ohio Department of Transportation.

He then served as the first executive director of the Logan-Union-Champaign (LUC) Regional Planning Commission, a position he held for 31 years.

The commissioners noted that Mr. Scott played an important role in assisting Honda of America Manufacturing and related companies in the location and development of their respective facilities in our area.

The honoree was also an active player in the initial development of the Transportation Research Center in East Liberty and the acquisition of the former U.S. Air Force Base site as the location of the Ohio Hi-Point Career Center.

In addition, Mr. Scott was one of several individuals who were instrumental in convincing the state to construct U.S. Route 33 as a four-lane divided highway from Marysville to Bellefontaine.

For 15 years, Mr. Scott also worked for the CDC of Ohio, a Columbus Consulting firm, as a case processor for HUD housing programs in Urbana.

An avid cyclist, he served diligently with the Simon Kenton Pathfinders Board to see the Simon Kenton bike trail extended from Urbana to Bellefontaine.

Also in the community, he is a member of the Board of Directors of Citizens Federal Savings & Loan, is involved with the American Legion Buckeye Boys State Program and has served for eight years on the Logan County Veterans Service Commission. Mr. Scott is an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Bellefontaine.
