Two men were arrested Thursday, March 27, following a high-speed chase and foot pursuit after deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop two vehicles reportedly racing along U.S. Route 33.
Andrew Johnson, 20, and Anthony Smith, 22, both of Columbus, were each charged with multiple felonies.
Johnson was charged with receiving stolen property, and failure to comply with the order or signal of a peace officer, both fourth-degree felonies; obstructing official business, a fifth-degree felony; as well as driving under a non-compliance suspension, reckless operation of a motor vehicle and speeding.
Smith was charged with receiving stolen property obstructing official business, fourth- and fifth-degree felonies, respectively.
Around 5:47 p.m., deputies responded to reports of two vehicles — a gray Infiniti sedan and a maroon Dodge Challenger — racing westbound on U.S. 33 near State Route 347 at speeds exceeding 100 mph. Deputies clocked the Infiniti at 110 mph in a 70 mph zone and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but both vehicles fled.
As deputies pursued, the vehicles accelerated to approximately 130 mph, and officers from the Bellefontaine Police Department attempted to intercept them. BPD terminated their pursuit, while deputies continued.
The chase ended when the Infiniti veered off the roadway near the Town Trolley in Huntsville, leaving tire marks in a yard. The vehicle was later confirmed to be stolen out of Gahanna.
Witnesses reported seeing two Black males in gray sweatshirts flee on foot toward Fruit Street. Deputies and officers from Washington Township Police searched the area. A K9 unit was deployed near the wooded area behind 4700 Vine Street. After K9 Tega was announced, the two suspects emerged with their hands raised and were taken into custody without incident.
During questioning, Johnson admitted there were two Glock pistols — a Glock 19 and a Glock 31 — hidden in the woods. Both firearms were recovered. Johnson claimed ownership of the Glock 31, while Smith stated the Glock 19 belonged to him. Neither gun was reported stolen, and both men were legally permitted to possess firearms.
A search of the abandoned Infiniti revealed it was reported stolen on March 19, 2025, in Gahanna, with a Dell Chromebook inside at the time. A broken window, taped over on the right rear side, indicated forced entry. Deputies located a set of keys with a spring-loaded window breaker near the vehicle.
Johnson and Smith were transported to the Logan County Jail.
