Triad’s boys basketball team ended a 31-game losing skid at home on Saturday after pulling out a 47-42 win over Riverside in non-league action.
The Cardinals, who went 0-23 last season, grab their first win to improve to 1-8 overall. The Pirates fall to 2-11.
“I thought that we played some of our best basketball of the season in the first three quarters,” said RHS head coach Seth Bodenmiller. “We were very sharp on offense and played pretty solid on defense. In the fourth quarter, though, we just became too passive with the lead and then weren’t able to capitalize on a lot of scoring opportunities.”
Riverside held a 15-11 lead after the opening quarter and outscored Triad 14-10 in the second quarter. That gave the Pirates a 29-21 advantage heading into halftime.
The third quarter saw Riverside edge Triad 9-7, which left the Cardinals holding a 10-point lead (38-28). Triad came alive in the fourth quarter, though, and used a 19-4 run to take over the lead and grab the win.
“Triad got the momentum back and unfortunately we weren’t able to make the plays down the stretch that we needed to,” said Bodenmiller. “The blame falls on me, though, because they made some adjustments defensively and I don’t think that I put our guys in the best situations to succeed.”
Ayden Sanford carried the Triad offense with 15 points, Greg Sizmore had eight points, Batai Lease tallied seven points and Dillon Nott and Ayden Spriggs both chipped in six points.
For Riverside, Kaden Burk led the team with 16 points and John Zumberger had 12 points.
In junior varsity action, Triad defeated Riverside 55-44. Wyatt Cole paced the Cardinals with 18 points, while Landon Stewart led the Pirates with 22 points.
Triad’s freshman team beat Benjamin Logan 39-30.
Triad is back on the court Tuesday at home against Cedarville. Riverside plays at home on Friday against Waynesfield-Goshen.
