TIPP CITY — A Tipp City educator and coach was killed early Monday morning, Feb. 16, during what authorities are investigating as an apparent home invasion, according to information released by police and confirmed through various sources.

Officers of the Tipp City Police Department were dispatched at approximately 2:31 a.m. to a residence in the 900 block of Cunningham Court following a report of a burglary in progress with a resident inside the home who had been shot. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the victim’s husband and the couple’s two children, who were inside the residence at the time. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The woman was later identified as Ashley Flynn, 37, who worked as a volleyball coach at Tippecanoe Middle School and served as a substitute teacher in Tipp City Schools. She had also previously been employed as a full-time teacher in the district, according to school officials.

Police said the residence and surrounding area were immediately secured. Family members were notified and responded to assist with the care of the children and the victim’s husband. The Miami County Victim Witness Program was also contacted and responded to provide support at the scene.

Authorities indicated there were signs of forced entry at the home, and investigators believe the shooting occurred during a burglary that escalated. A perimeter was established in the neighborhood, and officers deployed police canines and an unmanned aerial system, or drone, to search for potential suspects. No suspects were located during the initial search.

Investigators and crime scene technicians from the Tipp City Police Department, along with agents from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, remained on scene throughout the day processing evidence and conducting follow-up investigation.

Tipp City Schools released a statement acknowledging Flynn’s death and expressing deep sorrow over the loss. District officials described her as a caring educator and coach known for her kindness, positive attitude and strong connections with students both in the classroom and on the volleyball court.

Counseling and support services were made available for students and staff affected by the tragedy, district officials said.

The shooting sent shockwaves through the Tipp City community, with residents, parents and students sharing messages of grief and remembrance. Plans for community gatherings and remembrances were being discussed as of Monday afternoon.

Police emphasized that the homicide investigation remains in its early stages. No arrests have been announced, and detectives continue to collect and analyze evidence, interview potential witnesses and review any available video footage from the area.

City Manager Eric Mack and members of Tipp City Council said they are deeply saddened by the tragic events, extending thoughts and prayers to the victim’s family and loved ones during what they described as an extremely difficult time for the community.

Mack said the Tipp City Police Department, along with assisting agencies, is actively investigating the incident and working to gather all relevant facts. He asked residents for patience as the investigation continues and urged the community to avoid speculation, emphasizing that the safety of Tipp City residents remains the city’s highest priority.
