Russell ‘Russ’ R. Carney, 93, of St. Paris, Ohio passed away on Monday, July 10, 2023, in Vancrest of Urbana.
He was born December 20, 1929 in Urbana, Ohio the son of Willis B. and Sylvia (Newton) Carney. Joined the United States Army at age 17 and spent 4 years mostly in Korea and was honorably discharged in 1951 as Staff Sargent.
Russ married the love of his life, Dorothy (Kline) Carney on April 10, 1955 in West Mansfield, Ohio. They raised 2 children together. Russ was an excellent mechanic, started by helping his father “tinker” on cars and tractors when he was very young. He worked as auto mechanic in several shops, then on High Line Construction as the heavy equipment mechanic. This took him to several states while his family often accompanied him.
Russ served as a Mad River Township Trustee for 24 years and 4 months. He was an active member of the Newson Missionary Church on Cow Path Road. He was a loving husband, father and grandpa. He loved to “Joke Around.” Russ loved his family and his country, he was proud to be an American.
Russell is survived by his wife of 68 years, Dorothy (Kline) Carney; daughter, Teresa K. (Joe) Black; sister, Rosemary Adams; grandchildren, Brian (Christine) Carney, Benjamin (Stephanie) Black, Andrew (AnaLisa) Black and Nikki Carter; great grandchildren, Maddison, Brooklyn & Brynlee Black, Colin, Christopher & Jacob Swift, Abigail & Sheamus Carney and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Jeffery Carney; son, Russell Carney Jr.; brothers, Donnell, Charles & Gerald and brother-in-law, Donald Kline.
A gathering of friends and family will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 22, in the Newson Missionary Church, 9310 Cow Path Rd, Saint Paris, OH 43072.
A celebration of life will be at noon in the church with Pastor Dick McIntosh and Pastor Warren Banks officiating.
Burial will follow at Nettlecreek Cemetery.
