The annual Light Up the Lake Spectacular, set for 10 p.m. Saturday, July 1, is gearing up for one of its most anticipated shows yet, with organizers expecting a surge in attendees this year. As the show continues to grow in popularity, authorities are taking necessary measures to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all spectators.
In recent years, the fireworks show has witnessed a remarkable increase in the number of visitors, drawing crowds from near and far to marvel at the spectacular display. This surge in attendance has prompted organizers to continue to implement safety precautions and make necessary adjustments to accommodate the growing demand.
The bike path on State Route 366 between Township Road 239 and Paradise Island is now closed to prepare for the launch of the fireworks. Authorities kindly request that individuals avoid this area and respect the closure.
The launch site for the 2023 Indian Lake Fireworks Show will be located on the south bank of Indian Lake, starting from the Midway parking lot on State Route 366 near Township Road 239. The fireworks will be visible along the bike path east to Paradise Point. To facilitate the preparations, this area has been closed since Monday, June 26, and is marked with fencing.
Parking arrangements have also been updated to accommodate the expected influx of visitors. The Old Field Beach parking lot will be open on Saturday until it reaches capacity. Once the lot is full, it will be closed to additional vehicles. Spectators are urged to park only in designated areas and refrain from parking on roadways or obstructing traffic.
Indian Lake State Park is offering overflow parking in the grassy areas along the west and south bank, up to the safety zone. Vehicles must be parked off the roadway, and motorized vehicles are strictly prohibited on the bike path. The area between the bike path and the lake is reserved for fireworks viewing, not for vehicles. Tent set-ups are permitted on the grass but must not obstruct the bike path.
To ensure the safety of boaters, a boaters safety zone will be marked with orange buoys on Saturday. This area will extend from the south shore into open water and will feature three barges loaded with fireworks. Boat traffic is strictly prohibited within the safety zone to prevent any accidents or disturbances.
Boaters are advised to plan ahead and avoid areas with dense vegetation. Additionally, it is crucial to have working navigation lights on vessels and to use them appropriately, relying on navigation lights rather than docking lights. Every person on board should have a life vest, and it is essential to boat responsibly and refrain from alcohol consumption.
In preparation for the event, the state park restrooms will close at 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 1. Portable toilets will be available for use to ensure convenience for attendees.
Following the fireworks show, traffic leaving Old Field Beach will be directed to make right turns only. Motorists are advised to expect potential traffic congestion and to exercise caution, particularly when pedestrians are present. Signage and traffic personnel will guide vehicles, and it is crucial to follow their directions.
Organizers urge everyone to bring trash bags and maintain a clean environment by properly disposing of waste. Additionally, for the safety of all attendees, alcohol is not permitted at the event, and visitors are encouraged to leave it at home.
Attendees will start to see a shot go up every 10 minutes starting at 9 p.m. and are encouraged to tune their radios to 98.3 WPKO or 92.1 The Frog – Lima’s New Country.
As the Light Up the Lake Spectacular prepares for its grandest display yet, organizers are committed to ensuring a safe and unforgettable experience for all spectators. With the incredible growth of the event, the Indian Lake community is eagerly anticipating the upcoming fireworks extravaganza.
