Phyllis Joan Stinson

Phyllis Joan Stinson, 90, of Bellefontaine, passed away Sunday, December 3, 2023, at Mary Rutan Hospital, Bellefontaine, Ohio.

Phyllis was born on March 14, 1933, in Logan County, Ohio, to Lawrence and Beatrice (Fout) Shafer.

A graduate of Washington High School (Lewistown, Ohio), in her youth she worked in Bellefontaine at Isaly’s and manned the candy counter at G.C. Murphy. Later she worked at Murphy’s Mart and Ames.

While still in high school, she set her eye on an industrious young man and classmate, Donald Stinson, whom she married on November 6, 1953, at the Open Door Chapel Church of God in Bloom Center. Thus began a 70-year union, and her greatest joy and accomplishment in life, that of being a godly wife, mother, and homemaker.

Phyllis enjoyed gardening, decorating, reading, and antiquing. She was a wonderful cook, and enjoyed collecting recipes and planning holiday meals for her family. Together, she and Don planned and hosted many annual Christmas parties for the Layman’s Sunday school class of Calvary Baptist Church, of which she was a member for 50 years.

She is survived by her loving husband; a daughter, Brenda Thomas; a grandson, Scott (Morghan) Barnett; a granddaughter, Megan Thomas; and a great-grandson, Carter Barnett, all of Lakeview. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her very beloved grandparents Earl Plum and Mary Lulu (Shultz) Shafer; and siblings Maxine Shafer, Pauline Hurless, and Janet Shafer.

Pastor Jeff Willetts will officiate her funeral on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, where the visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Huntsville Cemetery.
