OVI physical control charge issued

Timothy Castle, 11900 County Road 87, Lakeview, was charged with having physical control of a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs Saturday, Oct. 21.

Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office responded about 7:15 p.m. to the Lakeview Meadows Mobile Home Park, lot 2, on a report of a vehicle that had crashed into the yard. The caller reported that the driver had been observed swerving prior to the crash and also did not have the vehicle’s headlights on.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they observed Castle sitting in the driver’s seat of a 2006 Jeep Liberty parked in the grass with the engine running. Castle reportedly was slumped over the steering wheel and he slowly began to wake up when deputies began talking to him.

Deputies observed that the defendant displayed signs of impairment. He refused to participate in field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest. Deputies said he couldn’t remember what he was being arrested and had to be reminded at least five times en route to the Logan County Jail.

Assault charge issued after campground incident
Ronald L. Cooper, 59, of London, Ohio, was charged with assault related to an incident Friday evening, Oct. 20.

Deputies responded to Kamp-A-Lott, 1888 S. County Road 25, Bellefontaine, in reference to an assault.

Deputies first spoke with Cooper, one of the callers about the incident. Cooper stated that he was near the restroom and he spoke to another man, later identified as the victim of the assault, about messing with his campsite. Cooper said no assault had taken place, but that the other man did a “friendly shove” on Cooper’s shoulder.

Deputies also spoke with the victim, who said Cooper drove up to him while he was by the restroom and accused him of messing with Cooper’s campsite.

The victim later approached the defendant in his vehicle. He said that’s when Cooper grabbed his left hand and punched him in the left side of the face. Deputies observed a visible mark on the victim’s hand and face.

Cooper was placed under arrest and was transported to the jail.

Theft of campaign signs reported
Deputies responded Thursday afternoon, Oct. 19, to an address on Township Road 29, East Liberty, on a report of campaign signs being stolen from the property.

The resident reported that campaign signs promoting Zane Township trustee candidate Amie Raterman were taken from her yard.

One sign was taken from the yard overnight Oct. 14, and the second sign had been taken sometime the previous evening Oct. 18 or in the early morning hours of Oct. 19.

Deputies contacted Raterman, who reported that had been additional thefts of her campaign signs had occurred around the township, totaling 22 signs. Investigation continues.

Hit-skip crash reported on S.R. 292
Deputies responded about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, on a report of a hit-skip crash at State Route 292 and County Road 2.

Deputies said an eastbound pickup on C.R. 2 operated by an unknown driver drifted recklessly into the intersection and then turned northbound, striking the left rear of a northbound Honda CR-V operated by Christopher D. Watkins, 41, of Kenton.

The driver of the pickup then left the scene.

Damage was light to the CR-V. Watkins was wearing his seat belt and did not report any injuries.

• Deputies also responded about 7:20 a.m. Wednesday to the 7300 block of County Road 13 on a report of a vehicle that struck a horse in the road.

Karen K. Tron, 54, of DeGraff, reportedly operating a westbound 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser when her vehicle struck the horse, causing heavy damage to the sport utility vehicle.

Tron did not report any injuries and was wearing a seat belt, deputies said.
