A female motorist that reportedly struck a mailbox around 11 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 24, and fled the scene was arrested a short time later for impaired driving and child endangering.

Lindsey Smith, 28, of Springfield, was also cited for failure to control after the northbound 2007 silver Honda Accord she was driving traveled left of center and struck a mailbox in the area of the 5800 block of U.S. Route 68 in Liberty Township. Smith failed to stop after the crash and continued northbound towards the city limits, deputies from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office report.

A witnessed called in the crash and officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department were dispatched to the south side of town to identify the vehicle. Officers observed a silver Accord without functional headlights and significant front end damage traveling northbound in that area. A traffic stop was initiated in the area of 1212 south Main Street.

Signs of intoxication were observed when officers made contact with the driver, Smith. A pack of Mike’s Hard Lemonade was observed on the floor of the passenger’s side. She also admitted to officers to having consumed Fireball shots prior to driving. A one-year-old child was also traveling in the vehicle, officers report.

Field sobriety tests were unsuccessful, and Smith was taken into custody and transported to the police department where she took a breathalyzer test that registered a .181 blood-alcohol content.

She was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, child endangerment, and was lodged in the Logan County Jail.
