The Bellefontaine City Council convened Tuesday, Oct. 10, in a meeting that included the swearing-in of a new firefighter, progress on the installation of Peak Fiber Internet at the Bellefontaine Municipal Airport, and revisions to the city’s flood prevention plans.
Jordan Simon was sworn in as the newest firefighter on the Bellefontaine Fire Department.
Peak Fiber Internet is in the process of being installed at the Bellefontaine Municipal Airport after council authorized the project on second and final reading.
The initiative is expected to improve communication and connectivity for both aviation and administrative purposes at the airport, benefiting residents and businesses in the vicinity.
In a move aimed at bolstering the city’s flood prevention measures, the council approved on third reading an ordinance amending Bellefontaine’s flood prevention plans. The amendment includes the incorporation of new floodplain maps created by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The updated flood prevention plans are designed to ensure greater resilience against flooding and to safeguard the interests of the community.
Law Director Stolly delivered news about a recent petition to place an amendment on the November ballot concerning the current city ordinance regulating Adult Entertainment. This petition, which sought changes to the ordinance, was overturned by the Ohio Supreme Court on Sunday.
Stolly emphasized that any proposed changes to local ordinances should be scrutinized carefully, with a focus on enforceability. He cited specifically a court ruling in Tennessee that overturned a local law because it was deemed discriminatory and unconstitutional.
The next regular city council meeting is Oct. 24.
