National event invites community to countywide fun

We’re already three days in, but it’s not too late to explore Logan County during National Tourism Week, May 7 to 12.

“We want to show people everything our community has to offer,” Anna Louden, Logan County Visitors Bureau (LCVB) director, said. “It can be easy to forget all the great things our county has.”

For our area, things got off to a notable start at Piatt Castle Mac-A-Cheek Sunday afternoon, May 7, when over 185 visitors explored the castle and grounds. Sunday’s schedule also introduced a new stop on the week’s agenda — Stoner’s Ice Cream Parlor in West Liberty.

Monday kept things in that historic vein with tours of the 1906 Orr Mansion and the two museums at the Logan County History Center. This included the new Fun, Funky and Fascinating Finds exhibit and a restored 1922 locally made biplane.

But don’t worry—the week is just getting started. You still have time today (Tuesday) to stop by Ohio Caverns between 1 and 4 p.m. for a free hot dog. Then head into West Liberty to Marie’s Candies, which is offering a free treat for anyone who mentions “tourism week” before they close at 6 p.m.

Bellefontaine’s Holland Theatre gets the spotlight on Wednesday, May 10. The staff there are offering free behind-the-scenes tours between 5 and 7 p.m. You can also learn more about their current fundraiser to bring back the theatre’s iconic marquee.

Also on Wednesday, May 10, staff from the LCVB, including Louden, will attend the Ohio Tourism Day annual celebration in downtown Columbus. They’ll have a booth there to promote Logan County as a great vacation or day-trip destination.

This free event — from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the West Plaza of the Ohio Statehouse — includes entertainment, demonstrations, interactive experiences and booths featuring tourism industry leaders from around the state.

Back in Logan County, the fun continues on Thursday at Marmon Valley Farm. From 3 to 6 p.m., you and your family can play putt-putt and feed the animals for only $3 each.

The week will close out at Spend-A-Day Marina on Indian Lake in Russells Point on Friday, May 12. Hop on a pontoon boat for a historic boat tour around Sandy Beach Bridge anytime between 3 and 6 p.m.

Scavenger Hunt

Like 2022, this year’s tourism week includes an app-based scavenger hunt around the county. Put together by the visitors bureau using the Goosechase app, the fun includes checking in at numerous locations, answering local trivia questions and taking photos of various points of interest.

To participate, download the Goosechase app. Follow the directions to create an account. Using the search bar at the top of the main page, type in “Logan County Tourism Week.”

The visitors bureau hopes the hunt will “help you explore Logan County and possibly see something you didn’t even know was here.” Louden specifically noted the adventures to be found at the Myeerah Nature Preserve, with over 450 acres for families to explore.

Plus, the top team in the scavenger hunt will win a prize basket containing gift cards and other items from the area.
