
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office report one person was killed and two others were injured in a three-vehicle crash around noon Friday, Feb. 28, on U.S. Route 68 just south of Township Road 190.
Deana Speakman, 48, of Bellefontaine, was identified as the person killed in the crash. Deputies report she was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be freed by first responders. She was transported by Macochee Joint Ambulance District to Mary Rutan Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Speakman was driving a 2006 silver Honda Civic and struck Charles Emory, 81, of Springfield, who was driving a 2014 black Ford F-150. He sustained serious injuries and was transported by Bellefontaine Fire & EMS to Mary Rutan Hospital.
Michael Steveley, 58, of Springfield, was transported to Mary Rutan Hospital by Tri-Valley Fire & EMS for serious injuries. He was driving a 2016 black Ford F-150 that was struck following the initial collision between Speakman and Emory.
Deputies report Speakman was traveling southbound on U.S. Route 68 when her vehicle traveled left of center and struck Emory’s northbound pickup truck. Speakman’s vehicle came to rest in the southbound lane.
After the initial collision, Emory’s pickup traveled left of center and struck Steveley’s southbound F-150, causing Steveley’s vehicle to go off the right side of the roadway and into a ditch. Emory’s truck came to rest in the southbound lane.
Damage to all three vehicles was heavy, and they were towed from the scene.
This is the first fatal crash in Logan County this year.

Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office report one person was killed and two others were injured in a three-vehicle crash around noon Friday, Feb. 28, on U.S. Route 68 just south of Township Road 190.
A female driver of a 2006 Honda Civic was claimed in the crash. She had been flown by Careflight helicopter to an area hospital for treatment of injuries.
Two male drivers, each of whom were operating Ford F-150 pickups, were transported from the scene by squad to area hospitals for treatment of injuries, deputies said.
The identities of the drivers have not yet been released.
According to preliminary reports, the driver of the 2006 Honda Civic was traveling southbound on U.S. Route 68 when it went left of center, striking a northbound 2016 Ford F-150 angled head-on.
The Civic then came to rest in the southbound lane of travel.
After being struck by the car, the first Ford F-150 reportedly traveled left of center and struck a southbound 2016 Ford F-150 angled head-on.
The first Ford F-150 came to rest on the shoulder of the southbound lane of travel, while the second pickup traveled off the right side of the roadway, coming to rest in the ditch on the west side of the roadway.
Damage to the three vehicles was heavy, and all were towed from the scene.
The male driver of a fourth vehicle that came upon the scene right after the crash took evasive action to avoid the other vehicles and spun out into a field. He was not injured.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office continue to investigate the crash.
They were assisted by West Liberty Fire Department, Macochee Joint Ambulance District, Tri-Valley EMS and Bellefontaine Fire & EMS.
This is the first fatal crash in Logan County this year.
