Mary A. Contner, 95, of Bellefontaine, passed away at 10:04 p.m. on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at The Homestead at Logan Acres. She was born in Highland County, Ohio on April 19, 1929, to the late James and Vessie (Weaver) Holbrook.
On August 19, 1951, in Columbus, she married Philip Edwin Contner and he preceded her in death on June 16, 2015. Mary was also preceded in death by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Juanita (James) Wallingford, Freda (Carl) Lindsey, and Moncia Holbrook; brothers and sisters-in-law, Virgil (Virginia) Holbrook, Buford (Marie) Holbrook, Delbert (Ellen) Holbrook, Herbert (VernaJean) Holbrook, James (Mary) Holbrook, and Hobart (Gayle) Holbrook.
Mary is survived by her son, Dr. Gary (Karen) Contner; grandchildren, Matthew Contner and Alexander (Sarah) Contner; great grandchildren, Declan Grayson Contner, Kennedy Georgia Contner, and Rhett Crosby Contner; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary was a 1947 graduate of Jackson Township High School and was honored as Citizen of the year in her class. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Bellefontaine and past member and leader of the Alter Guild. Mary was also a past member of the Tuxis Circle of the King’s Daughter. During Mary’s career as a secretary, she worked for the Farm Bureau Insurance Company, the former F.N. Johnson Company, and Superfood Services. For many years, she and her husband wintered in Florida, where they played golf, shuffleboard, cards, and line dancing. Mary also did extensive work in genealogy. She enjoyed hosting dinners, and was an avid card player, especially bridge. Mary will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Pastor Bryan Meadows will officiate a funeral service at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 28, 2024, at the First Lutheran Church, 208 W. Sandusky Avenue, Bellefontaine. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow the service in Zanesfield Cemetery.
