Update: Man found unresponsive in Champaign County identified

UPDATE: CHAMPAIGN COUNTY — Deputies have released additional information regarding an unresponsive male found earlier in Champaign County.

The decedent has been identified as Scott Thuma, 60, of Springfield. According to deputies of the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, preliminary information at the scene indicated the incident did not appear to be the result of a motor-vehicle crash.

Lifesaving measures were initiated, and Thuma was transported to Mercy Health–Urbana Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

During the scene investigation, deputies used a metal detector and located a handgun in the snow near Thuma.

Based on evidence collected at the scene and subsequent investigative findings, the sheriff’s office has determined Thuma died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities report there is no indication of foul play and no ongoing threat to the public.

The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an adult male who was found unresponsive Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 3, on Dolly Varden Road south of Urbana.

According to deputies, dispatchers received a 911 call at approximately 12:27 p.m. reporting an unresponsive man on Dolly Varden Road near State Route 54.

Deputies and EMS responded within minutes and located the man outside a vehicle. He was breathing at the time but had suffered significant head trauma and blood loss. A black Kia Sorento was found parked nearby with no visible damage, and preliminary information indicated the incident did not appear to be the result of a motor vehicle crash.

Life-saving measures were initiated at the scene, and the man was transported to Mercy Health – Urbana Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Sheriff Chad M. Burroughs said there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the community based on information gathered thus far.

The death remains under active investigation by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Champaign County Coroner’s Office.
