A man was arrested Monday afternoon following an altercation downtown that led a concealed carry permit holder to draw his firearm in self-defense.
Shortly after 1 p.m. on Feb. 3, officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department responded to reports of a male suspect with a gun near north Main Street and west Columbus Avenue. Upon arrival, officers determined that the suspect, Derek Hughes of Bellefontaine, had approached a victim, and an argument ensued. The confrontation escalated and Hughes reportedly assaulted the victim.
The victim reportedly is a concealed carry permit holder, and drew a firearm in response. Hughes immediately fled the scene but was located and apprehended by officers a short time later.
Hughes was lodged in the Logan County Jail and charged with assault. Authorities suspect he may have been experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the incident. Police confirmed there was no prior connection between Hughes and the victim. The victim will not face any criminal charges.
