The Logan County Jail will be receiving over $500,000 for renovations as part an on-going grant program, Governor Mike DeWine said Friday.
Governor DeWine and the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections (ODRC) said Friday the state is awarding over $50 million in grants from Ohio’s Jail, Safety and Security Program to 19 local jails across the state.
Logan County is one of those 19 counties and will receive a grant of $549,012 for HVAC, mechanical, and plumbing improvements, as well as renovations to the intake, booking and medical areas at the LCJ. The grant represents 59 percent of the total cost of the project.
The Logan County Sheriff’s Office and Jail Complex, 284 S. County Road 32, Bellefontaine, opened at its current site in 2000.
Funding for this round of the Ohio Jail Safety and Security Grant Program comes from the current capital budget. Including Friday’s totals, more than $228 million in state funding has been awarded to 50 jails serving over 50 counties.
“This funding will not only support safer environments for those living and working in our local jails, but it will also help prepare inmates for release by creating improved spaces for workforce development, educational opportunities, and other programming,” said Governor DeWine.
In Friday’s announcement, the Tri-County Jail in Champaign County will receive over $46,000 for renovations to create video services for court hearings and a private space for mental health services.
In this round of grants, Ashtabula County received the largest of $15 million for renovations to its jail, while Muskingum County received $7 million for the construction of a entirely new jail and closing its current facility, which was built in 1977.
