Area wide youth suicide prevention and awareness efforts are getting a boost thanks to a substantial state grant from the Ohio Department of Health.

The Suicide Prevention Coalition of Logan and Champaign Counties was allocated a $50,000 grant allocation to fund suicide prevention strategies and approaches aimed at helping youth and young adults ages 10 to 24 years.

The local suicide prevention group is among seven similar coalitions statewide to receive the grant funding, according to an announcement from ODH.

A total of $350,000 to seven suicide prevention coalitions across Ohio, with each coalition receiving $50,000 to implement strategies focused on youth and young adults aged 10 to 24.

The coalitions in Cuyahoga, Darke, Hamilton, Highland/Pike, Licking, Logan and Lucas counties have been identified as recipients of this crucial funding. The grants aim to support initiatives that address suicide prevention, emphasizing the unique challenges faced by the specified age group.

The Public Health Fund of Ohio, established in July 2020, aligns with ODH’s mission to enhance the health and well-being of all Ohioans. This initiative is also in support of ODH’s State Health Improvement Plan, furthering the state’s commitment to public health.

The seven coalitions will be eligible for a second grant of up to $50,000 in late 2024, demonstrating a sustained commitment to ongoing suicide prevention efforts. Twenty-seven coalitions were eligible to apply for funding based on data measures from ODH.

Coalitions are encouraged to adopt strategies from the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation’s Plan and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Suicide Prevention Resource for Action. These resources advocate for strengthening economic supports, preventing future risk, improving access to suicide care, supporting those at risk, creating protective environments, teaching coping skills and promoting healthy connections.

The Suicide Prevention Coalition of Logan and Champaign Counties takes a proactive approach by promoting and coordinating mental health screenings within local schools.

This initiative aims to identify and address potential mental health concerns among students, ensuring timely support and intervention.

Actively engaging with the community, the coalition conducts awareness campaigns through various avenues, including community events and media campaigns. These efforts seek to destigmatize mental health discussions and foster an environment where open dialogue and understanding can flourish.

The coalition extends its impact by providing speakers and organizing training sessions for interested groups and organizations. By sharing insights and practical tools for intervention, they empower a broader audience to actively participate in suicide prevention efforts.

The coalition meets at the West Liberty office of TCN Behavioral Health every first Tuesday of the month from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
