LCBDD celebrates Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in March

March was designated as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in 1997 by President Ronald Regan to help bring awareness and acceptance for people of every ability.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness month is reminder that we are all part of a broad spectrum of intellectual and physical functioning, Logan County Board of Developmental Disabilities Executive Director Krista Oldiges related.

“It is an opportunity to reflect, and be more empathetic that everyone faces challenges, regardless of I.Q. or diagnosis,” she said.

Today, it is estimated that over six million Americans have developmental disabilities.
In 1959, services began in Logan County, when a group of interested parents and friends met to start a school for children with developmental disabilities, serving 11 students. Today, the Logan County Board of Developmental Disabilities serves more than 500 people. The Logan County Board of DD funds and supports services for all ages, to assist people with developmental disabilities to live, work and engage in their communities, throughout Logan County.

“We believe that every person adds value to our community,” Oldiges said. “When we welcome and include everyone, our communities are made whole, we are stronger, we accomplish more, and the entire community benefits. Every month and every day should be Developmental Disabilities awareness for all of us.

“Throughout the month, we will be highlighting success stories in our community. Keep an eye out for these articles in the Examiner and on our Facebook page.”
