The ball dropped for Indian Lake more so than for Benjamin Logan.
The two Logan County squads met for a doubleheader on Friday night, with the girls playing the first game and the boys squaring off in the nightcap.
The Lakers boys came out on top by a score of 49-30.
For Indian Lake, Avery Pequignot had 14 points and Brodey Reisinger had 13 on the night. The Lakers improve to 3-0 in Central Buckeye Conference action and 4-3 overall.
“We wanted to defend a lot better than what we have been doing,” said Indian Lake coach Zach Overturf. “Offensively, we saw some things and knew how we wanted to attack them. We didn’t shoot very well. But we still did some good things late.”
The Raiders offense was led by Maddox Vermillion with eight points. Cayden Brown and Diesel Baughman got seven apiece.
“Defensively, our game plan worked well for the first quarter and first part of the second,” said Ben Logan coach Scott Vermillion. “The wheels kind of fell off just a little bit. We lost some confidence.”
He added that “Indian Lake runs the floor well. They get downhill well. We worked on getting back and stopping them. There were at least contested layups.”
A basket and two free throws by Pequignot got the Lakers out front at the start of the game. Ben Logan then answered with a couple scores by Brown and a shot by Peyton Vermillion for a 6-4 edge.
A three-pointer from Pequignot was followed by Weston Campbell slicing through. The teams exchanged scores one more time, leaving the Lakers ahead 11-8 after one.
Pequignot and Tyler Tidwell hit shots about a minute apart in the early stretch of the second quarter.
Ethan Miller connected for the Raiders. However, that would prove to be their only points of the frame.
Colin Bendler made a steal and fed the ball to Madden Lillard for two. The Lakers would get just a couple more scores, both courtesy of Bendler and had a double-digit lead, 21-10, at the break.
The Raiders were able to cut into that deficit at the start of the third with long-range shots by Maddox Vermillion and Brown. Reisinger had a score for the Lakers in between.
Indian Lake then cracked down on defense and heated up on offense. A 9-0 run pushed the lead up to 32-16 over the course of a couple of minutes. Reisinger had most of those points, along with a 3-pointer by Lillard.
Maddox Vermillion made a one-hand jumper with two minutes left. Indian Lake got three scores to close out the period and make it a 20-point cushion.
Ben Logan got some good shooting by Baughman with three straight scores in the fourth quarter. Indian Lake continued to maintain its lead and Pequignot would make the last shot of the night.
“We’re settled in with everybody’s roles,” said Overturf. “Offense, defense, whatever, we just have to get better.”
Vermillion said that “we’re still learning. We’re starting to come together. We need to improve on some things offensively. Our guys are coming along. We’ve got games that we’re going to compete in.”
Indian Lake (3-0 CBC, 4-3) is back in action on Tuesday at North Union.
Ben Logan (0-4 CBC, 1-9) has a week off until playing at Graham next Thursday.
