Joanne Mary Maag, 90, passed from this life to eternal life on May 29, 2023.

She was born July 31, 1932, to the late Victor and Cecilia Schroeder. Joanne married Modestus J. Maag on January 31, 1953. He preceded her in death in 2016.

Surviving are her daughters, Karen (Dennis) Wischmeyer of Lakeview, OH, Joyce (Bill) Smith of Benton, LA, Janet (Gorden) Best of Stokesdale, NC, Bonnie Weidner of New Braunfels, TX, Marlene (Bryan) Rapp of Columbus, OH, Susan (David Gobble) Honcharuk of Greenfield, IN, Irene (Johnny) Hernandez of San Antonio, TX and Laura (Jose) Vazquez of Shreveport, LA. and Esperanza Shoe of Russells Point, OH, 23 grandchildren, and 46 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, all of her brothers and sisters, Margaret Stechschulte, Blanche Stechschulte, Helen (Bill) Aelker, Gib (Judy) Schroeder, Leo (Rita) Schroeder, Dan (Jeanie) Schroeder, Mary (Bob) Wildenhaus, Kate Verhoff, and Annie (Jimmy) Dotzauer, along with many nieces and nephews, in-laws, Teresa Borgelt, and Walter and Janet Maag.

A 1950 graduate of Glandorf High School, Joanne lived and worked on a farm all her life. A 4-H advisor for 15 years, a devoted parishioner of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Russells Point, a life-long member of Altar Rosary Sodality and The Catholic Ladies of Columbia. She was active with the women’s auxiliary of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus; creative in sewing, quilt making and crocheting. Excursions with the Red Hat Ladies and the occasional jaunts to the casino always yielded a good story. She especially treasured her Wednesday card group, otherwise known as her therapy group.

Expressly near and dear to her heart were the next-door neighbors, John and Joan Hinterschied. World travelers, Dessie and Joanne were hospitable to all sorts of individuals, hosting 6 exchange students and opening their doors to people who needed a place to stay. She was a woman of deep faith and emanated it to every soul she met.

Visitation is Thursday, June 1, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Shoffstall Funeral Home, 205 S. Main St, Lakeview. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday, June 2, with Rev. Shawn Landenwitch officiating. Burial is in Huntsville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests memorial contributions be made in her honor to Saint Vincent de Paul Society, c/o St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church, P.O. Box 329, Russells Point, OH 43348, a charity Joanne was particularly fond of.
