Indian Lake Board of Education members are considering construction of a new bus maintenance garage, a move that would allow the school to utilize the existing facility as an expanded practice facility for the wrestling program.

School board members during a Monday, March 20, regular meeting entered into an agreement with Garmann/Miller, a Minster-based multi-service design, architectural and engineering firm, to provide design services for master planning and programming of a new bus garage that would better suit the needs of larger school buses that are currently in use today.

In a separate agreement, the board authorized Garmann/Miller to serve as the design professional and provide design services for master planning and programming for work on the potential renovation of the existing bus garage into a wrestling team practice facility, as the growth of the school’s wrestling program has rendered the current wrestling facilities too small.

In student achievements, the board honored sophomore Owen Pummel, who represented Indian Lake at the OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament for a second year in a row.

Board members also recognized several winter athletes. Members of the Indian Lake High School Girls Bowling Team and their Coach Gina Rucker were at the meeting to celebrate their historic season and sixth-place finish at the State Bowling Tournament. Members of the team include Jalan Hughes, Jalan Martin, Kayleigh Zedlitz, Andi Miller, Samantha Johnson and Addison Castle.

Additional action taken during the meeting included approval of a contract with Ohio Technical Services, Inc. to abate a very small amount of asbestos that has been undisturbed at ILHS for decades.

“This is precautionary. They will remove all the asbestos in the corridors of the 1968 part of the building,” Superintendent Dr. Rob Underwood said. “It’s the first step of the larger HVAC project to extend air conditioning to all of the high school.”

The abatement will begin as soon as school is out in late May. The entire HVAC project is expected to last all summer and be finished in the fall. Indian Lake is using remaining Covid-19 and other district money for the project.

The resignation of Meaghen Tidwell, director of special education, was approved effective at the end of the 2022-2023 contract. Also approved was a supplemental contract for Dave Coburn, middle school track.

The next regular meeting is 6:30 p.m. April 17.
