The Indian Lake Schools Board of Education took the final step at their regular meeting Monday night, July 24, toward placing a renewal levy on the general election ballot.
Board members approved a resolution declaring the intent to proceed with asking voters to renew the levy in November. The 4.6-mill emergency operating renewal asks for no new money.
Superintendent Dr. Rob Underwood explained the levy further.
“We’ve had some questions about the term ’emergency’ and what that means is that the district is projecting deficit spending in the cycle of that levy.”
The current levy is set to expire at the end of 2024.
Superintendent Underwood also gave the board an update on several projects happening on campus this summer. First, the HVAC project work at Indian Lake High School is right on schedule.
However, crews recently received news that the chiller unit that was supposed to be installed in September is now delayed until November because of labor and equipment shortages.
“We don’t think we’ll be up and running with full air conditioning for this fall. But as far as the building itself, it will be put back together with new ceilings and lighting down the hallways.”
Maintenance crews continue to install new doors and additional security cameras throughout the buildings. Outside Laker Stadium, a new gate is awaiting signage for the upcoming season.
Outgoing IL Music Boosters President April King offered an update on the group and predicted that new leadership will be creative and effective.
Finally, the board voted to keep lunch and breakfast prices the same for the 2023-24 school year, as follows: breakfast — elementary and middle school, $1.50; high school, $2; and adult, 2.50; and lunch — elementary, $2.50; middle school, $2.75; high school, $3.25; and adult, $4.25.
In other action, the board:
• approved the following staff advancements on the salary schedule: master’s plus 45 — Sheri Abbott, Amber Shively, Christina Fullerton; master’s plus 25 — Ryan Lillard, Dan Young, Mary Wolf, Sarah Beres, Holly Powers, Randy Page; master’s — Andrea Jacobs, Paige Dukowitz-Holt, Brian Claybaugh;
• accepted the resignation of Whitney Miller, four-hour elementary cook; and extended a one-year limited contract to Genevieve Proctor for the position;
• extended supplemental contracts to: Alexis Scheiderer, Indian Lake Professional Development Committee chairperson; Melanie Asman – Recorder; Jason Fauley, Molly Hall and Kelli Miller, ILPDC members; Renee Metzger, HS Assistant Cross Country Coach; Brian Claybaugh, Isaac Bennett, high school assistant football (50 percent each); Dallas Clary, JV boys soccer;
• approved a summer stipend paid through Title IV Professional Development Funds for Kourtney Thompson, CPR Training at Mary Rutan;
• approved the 2023-24 Program Service Agreement between the Midwest Regional Educational Service Center and Indian Lake Local Schools; and
• adjourned to executive session for the purpose of meeting with the board’s legal counsel to discuss disputes involving the district that are the subject of pending or imminent court action.
The Indian Lake Board of Education will meet again at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 21. The 2023-24 school year is set to begin Wednesday, Aug. 30.
