IL BOE: Volleyball games to be relocated due to gym damage

High school volleyball games at Indian Lake High School will be relocated this fall season, board of education members learned during a recent regular meeting.

In his report, Superintendent Dr. Rob Underwood told the board that hail damage from the March 14 tornado continues to plague the district. He explained that as crews were recently replacing the roof above the ILHS Main Gym yet another catastrophe occurred.

“They buttoned it for the day and actually had a roof drain that ended up leaking into the gym over the weekend during a rainstorm. Enough water came in that it damaged the floor beyond repair.”

The roofer’s insurance is going to pay an estimated $150,000 to replace the entire gym floor.

As a result, the ILHS Main Gym will likely be closed through most of the fall volleyball season. Dr. Underwood explained that Athletic Director Jeff Courter has already moved home volleyball games to the Indian Lake Middle School gym and the schedule has been changed to avoid any conflicts with the ILMS Volleyball teams.

Dr. Underwood said most of the tornado-related repairs are complete at Indian Lake Elementary School and crews will continue to work on the ILHS Main Gym and many areas of the high school into the fall.

Board members approved a few new staff members to round out the roster for the upcoming school year and recognized athletes who were honored at the state level. They are: Madison Brentlinger-1st Team All Ohio Softball, Quest Clay- 10th in Long Jump at the OHSAA Track Meet and Haylee Edwards-Honorable Mention All State Softball.

The Indian Lake Board of Education will meet again at 5 pm on Monday, Aug. 19. School begins Wednesday, Aug. 21.
