Zanesfield Petanque Club member Shannon Hodge traveled to Phnom Penh, Cambodia to participate in the 17th annual FIPJP Women’s Triples World Championships from Nov.19-23. Hodge won a qualifying tournament in 2018 to represent the United States at the event. There were 48 women’s teams at this years bi-annual event.
Hodge partnered with Tish Harris (California), Gina DeJoy (Florida) and Bo Edwards (North Carolina). They were coached by Juan Garcia (Florida).
Each team plays five qualifying rounds before bracket play. The top 24 move on to the main tourney and the remaining teams move on to the Nation’s Cup.
Play started on the 19th with three rounds. Team USA dropped their first two games losing to Myanmar 13-1 and Chinese Taipei 13-4. They rebounded in the third game with a win over Iran 12-11.
On the second day they played two games before bracket play. Team USA dropped both of these games falling to Indonesia 1-13 and Japan 13-3.
This ranked them number 44 to start Nation’s Cup play. Their first round game was versus Turkey which they lost 11-10 on time to knock them out of the tournament. Thailand won the tourney to become national champions.
