Herbert R. Litteral, 94, of Belle Center, passed away on Monday, July 3, 2023, at Mary Rutan Hospital in Bellefontaine, Ohio.

He was born in Ashland, KY on February 10, 1929, the son of the late Roe & Marie (Howard) Litteral.  He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Maxine Rosser and Dolores Cass, a brother Raymond Litteral, and a son-in-law, Tom Dorsey.

On July 21, 1951, he married Helen Joann (Patterson) Litteral, being married for 72 years and she survives.

He is survived by a daughter, Lori Dorsey, and a son, Greg (Ruth) Litteral, all of Belle Center, OH, five grandchildren; Katie (Ansel) Whittle, of Thomson, GA, Kristie (Derrick) Purtee, of Anna, OH, of Misty (Mark) Moore, of Glendive, MT, Scott & Tara Arndt, of Castle Pines, CO, and Tim & Renee Arndt, Cold Spring, KY, nine great grandchildren; Ansel Jr & Alex Whittle, Andy & Jack Purtee, Jack & Gabe Arndt, Brogan, Ronan, & Rykan Arndt, a sister Charlene Cameron, three brothers; Roy (Jackie) Litteral, Bub Litteral, and Bill Litteral.

Herbert was a U.S. Army Air Corp Veteran, serving his country during World War II.  He worked for Wright Patterson Air Force Base as a mechanic, and later worked as a founding engineer for NHTSA, later becoming Transportation Research Center (TRC).  He also worked for NASA as an engineer and Ohio Hi Point Career Center, as a teacher.  He was a member of the Masonic Temple and enjoyed fishing, golfing, hunting, and spending time with grandkids and great grandkids.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2023, in Northwood Cemetery (McArthur Twp.) to celebrate the life of Herbert Litteral, officiated by Pastor John Leighty and military honors provided by the United States Army.

Memorial contributions may be made to any charity of the donor’s choosing.
