A Logan County grand jury has indicted up indictments against two defendants charged with selling drugs around the Indian Lake area.
Ronald Shoffner II, 60, and Dawn Helton, 33, both of Lakeview were indicted on charges including tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony; possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony and obstructing official business, a second-degree misdemeanor.
Helton was charged additionally with possession of drug paraphernalia, a fourth-degree misdemeanor.
Shoffner and Helton were initially arrested during a traffic stop around 8:20 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, after Washington Township Police officers were alerted that the pair had been reportedly attempting to sell drugs in Belle Center. Officers later spotted their vehicle in the area of Stephenson Street and Oak Street in Lakeview and initiated the stop.
Helton consented to a search of her person, during which officers discovered a glass jar containing methamphetamine. A search of the vehicle uncovered two cut straws with a white crystal substance inside Helton’s purse. Additionally, officers found a plastic bag floating inside a coke can filled with soda, which field-tested positive for methamphetamine. Both Shoffner and Helton denied ownership of the substance inside the can.
Law enforcement officials executed arrest warrants Friday, Feb. 7, for Shoffner and Helton at a residence in the 11000 block of Kickapoo Path in Lakeview. The arrest was conducted by deputies from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Washington Township Police Department.
As officers approached the residence, Shoffner and Helton attempted to flee on foot. The brief pursuit ended behind a residence on Chickasaw Path, where Shoffner reportedly refused multiple commands to show his hands. After repeatedly reaching into his pocket and ignoring verbal orders, officers took Shoffner to the ground and placed him in handcuffs. Helton was also taken into custody without further incident.
Both suspects were transported to the Logan County Jail.
Others indicted were:
Kelly Hines, 55, of Bellefontaine: Attempted murder, a felony of the first degree; felonious assault, a second-degree felony; domestic violence, a misdemeanor of the first degree.
Hines was arrested Saturday, Feb. 8, by officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department and charged with attempted murder, a first-degree felony; felonious assault, a second-degree felony; and first-degree misdemeanor domestic violence, following a report of an assault that occurred shortly after 8 a.m.
Officers were dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of Colton Avenue and spoke with a witness, who reported that his uncle, Hines, had attacked the victim.
Officers entered the residence and found the victim sitting in a recliner with visible blood on his face. A lead pipe was found nearby, and was identified as the assault weapon.
The victim, who relies on an oxygen tank, suffered a large laceration across the bridge of his nose and additional injuries to his wrists, head, and eye. The victim identified Hines to officers as his attacker.
The witness reported that he heard the victim yell and came into the room to find the suspect hitting the victim with the pipe. He intervened by taking the pipe from Hines and striking him with it to stop the assault.
Officers were told that Hines had been living at the residence for five to six years but had left days earlier following an argument over smoking inside the home. The suspect reportedly returned the previous night without speaking to anyone before the morning attack.
Medics transported the victim to Mary Rutan Hospital, where he was diagnosed with multiple skull fractures and a severe brain injury. The victim had to be transferred to another hospital for advanced treatment of his skull fractures.
While at the hospital, Hines reportedly told a doctor that he had been trying to kill the victim.
Ashlee Cunningham, 41, of North Carolina: Aggravated possession of drugs, a felony of the fifth degree; aggravated possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony; and illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor of the fourth degree.
She was arrested Thursday, Sept. 26, for felony possession of controlled substances after law enforcement discovered multiple prescription pills and a white powdery substance in her vehicle during a traffic stop.
Deputies from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office on patrol around 2:17 p.m. observed a white Chevrolet Malibu changing lanes westbound without using a turn signal on U.S. Route in the area of State Route 540.
A traffic stop was initiated and deputies spoke with Cunningham, who explained she was driving to Indiana with her daughter for a family birthday. Deputies noted that Cunningham appeared nervous during the interaction, and would not make eye contact.
K9 officer Pyro was requested from the Bellefontaine Police Department and indicated to the presence of narcotics on the driver’s side door. A search turned up several pill bottles in a purse located in the back seat.
Officers identified five round pink pills as Oxycodone, 14 brown capsules as Amphetamine, and 136 round orange pills as muscle relaxants. Additionally, two straws containing a white powdery substance were found during the search.
Cunningham was arrested and charged with fifth-degree felony possession of Schedule II and Schedule IV controlled substances, as well as possession of drug paraphernalia. She was lodged in the Logan County Jail. The juvenile passenger was released to a family member.
Andrew Gilbert, 36, of Urbana: Tampering with evidence, a felony of the third degree; and aggravated possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony.
Gilbert was charged with multiple felony drug-related charges following a 4:54 p.m. traffic stop executed Monday, Nov. 6, by officers of the Washington Township Police Department in the area of State Route 235 near County Road 27.
Officers on patrol observed a vehicle with multiple equipment violations and initiated the stop.
Upon making contact with the driver, criminal indicators were observed and the driver of the vehicle consented to a search. As Gilbert, a passenger, exited the vehicle, officers reportedly observed him throw a canister containing methamphetamine under the vehicle.
A search of the vehicle uncovered multiple Ohio driver’s licenses and credit cards belonging to various individuals among Gilbert’s belongings. He was charged with tampering with evidence, possession of drugs and identity fraud and was lodged in the Logan County Jail.
