Former BCS superintendent Carter passes away

A former Bellefontaine City Schools superintendent has passed away at the age of 93.

Dr. Robert “Bob” Carter of Bellefontaine, died at Otterbein Green Hills Senior Life Community Wednesday evening, Feb. 5.

A native of Washington, Pa., Dr. Carter served as the BCS superintendent from 1978 to 1993. Prior to that time, he was employed with the Columbus City Schools and was a leader in the desegregation of the school system in the 1950’s.

He later started his own educational consulting business and worked with schools across the country.

His experience in education led to a close friendship with the president of Honda and several trips to Japan.

He is survived by a son (David), a daughter (Michelle), 7 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, a brother (Jon), and several nieces and nephews.

He and his wife, Marlene, were married for 63 years. She preceded him in death in June 2021.

Dr. Carter served in the US Army during the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart. He then earned his doctorate at The Ohio State University.

Arrangements are being handled by Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Bellefontaine.

Visitation is Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the First Presbyterian Church, 117 North Main Street, Bellefontaine.
