First Lutheran to dedicate new mural Easter Sunday

The combination of faith and art has long been a perfect pairing. And when the First Lutheran Church (FLC), 208 W. Sandusky Ave., Bellefontaine, wants to add a new mural to one of their walls, they contact local artist Holley Milroy.

Their latest collaboration — a painting depicting one of Jesus’ miracles, as told in Matthew 14 — will be dedicated during Sunday’s Easter breakfast on April 9, at 9 a.m. in the church’s Rice Hall.

“Jesus feeding the 5,000 is perfect for Easter,” Milroy said, and Novak added, “It’s good for our fellowship hall since we eat a lot of meals there.”

Milroy has been decorating homes and churches with her artistry for 47 years — it’s how she makes her living. And though she likes other modes of painting as well, Milroy is particularly drawn to the unframed versatility of murals.

“I like being able to create the image someone has in their head,” she said. “They visualize something, and I bring it out on the wall.”

For this mural, FLC provided Milroy with a stock photo of the image they had in mind. She was able to do part of the work at home before transferring it to the church. It took about two weeks for her to complete the project.

The breakfast and mural dedication Sunday morning will be followed by a communion worship service at 10 a.m. in the sanctuary.
