Ribbon cutting set for May 7
Costin Family Practice has built a long legacy of serving patients in the community, with Dr. Scott Costin following in his grandfather and father’s footsteps as the third generation of his family to work in this vital role.
Those many years building relationships with patients of all ages — from children to adults and senior citizens — were spent at the Swan building, 130 N. Detroit St., with a longstanding history as well dating back to 1908, when it opened as a medical office by Dr. Guy H. Swan.
The building served its purpose well as a medical facility for more than 110 years, and now Costin Family Practice is continuing its commitment to the health of residents of all ages with its move to a new location at 921 E. Sandusky Ave., Bellefontaine.
Early this year, Dr. Costin and fellow family physician Dr. Brian Schmidt began seeing patients at the new facility, which offers larger exam rooms, accessible parking and many other modern amenities to bring the practice into a brand new era.
“We’re excited to be here and are looking forward to continuing to grow our practice with plenty of space here and great visibility along east Sandusky Avenue,” Dr. Costin said from his new office.

To celebrate the move to the new space, the Logan County Chamber of Commerce hosts an official ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, alongside the Costin Family Practice staff.
This location formerly was the site of Mary Rutan Hospital’s Ear, Nose and Throat and Audiology clinic, before those specialities moved to the third floor of the Mary Rutan Health Center, 1134 N. Main St.
Dr. Costin said he recently began considering the vacant medical office space while the Swan building was encountering some issues related to its age, and the idea of the move kept becoming more and more appealing instead of making expensive repairs.
“It’s just like it was meant to be,” he said. “The use of space here is wonderful and we’re excited to see new and returning patients in our new office.”
A 1987 Bellefontaine High School graduate, Dr. Costin graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1991. While there, he was a member of the football team.
He continued his education at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and then returned to the Logan County area in 1998 to practice alongside his father, Dr. Art Costin.
The father and son pair worked together for approximately 25 years, with Dr. Art recently retiring December of 2023, after practicing medicine for 47 years.
Prior to that time, Dr. Scott’s grandfather, Dr. James Costin, began practicing at the Swan building in 1937, retiring in 1989 after nearly 50 years in the medical field.

Dr. Scott and his wife, Dr. Linda Costin, and their four children live locally. The college athlete is also proud to be the team physician for the Bellefontaine High School football team, and also donates his time doing sports physicals for all athletes for Bellefontaine City Schools.
Patients will also be happy to know that the OSU football themed-artwork from one of the exam rooms at the Swan building has also made its way to the new facility as well.
Dr. Schmidt joined the practice in November 2022. A Preble County native, he said it was during college that he decided to make the switch to the medical field.
“My wife and I were both education majors, and I thought I would be a science teacher,” he said this week. “But then I ended up falling in love with the idea of being a doctor. In my mind, I saw medicine as the pinnacle; I knew I loved science and I loved people, so it’s a great fit.”
So he switched schools, previously attending Bluffton University, and he entered Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s pre-med program and later graduated from the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2006.

Dr. Schmidt’s background includes extensive military service as well. He began serving as a Navy physician in 2006, where he completed an internship at Naval Medical Center San Diego.
Following his internship, Dr. Schmidt spent three years with a Marine Corps infantry battalion based in Hawaii. He served deployments with the unit to Iraq and Afghanistan in support of U.S. combat operations in 2008 and 2009.
Dr. Schmidt completed his Family Medicine Residency at Pensacola Naval Hospital in 2012. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 2015, following his service at the Naval Air Station in Lemoore, Calif.
In 2015, Dr. Schmidt moved to Bellefontaine, where he currently resides with his wife, Nicole, and their five children. In recent years, he has provided family medicine care, emergency medicine and urgent care to both our community and surrounding communities.
With the recent move of Costin Family Practice, Dr. Schmidt said he is thrilled for the future of the practice and continuing the role that he loves as a family physician.
“Costin Family Practice has served our community for many years, and I’m proud to be a part of the legacy here and being able to keep up with the ever-changing future of medicine.”
