Ernest R. “Ernie” McFarlin, 84, formerly of Bellefontaine and East Liberty, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2024 at Green Hills Community in West Liberty with his family by his side.

A graduate of Quincy High School and Olivet Nazarene College in Illinois, Ernie was a teacher in the Benjamin Logan school system for 30 years, retiring in 2000. He proudly served in the United States Army Reserves. A man of deep faith, he was a long time member of the Marysville Church of the Nazarene and taught Sunday school for 40 years. Recently, he had attended the East Liberty Community Church. He also enjoyed fishing and mowing the yard with his Ford tractor.

Born September 24, 1939 in Quincy, he was the son of the late Ernest A. and Mary E. (Burton) McFarlin. On May 26, 1961 in Belle Center, he married his wife of over 60 years, Darlene Sue (McMillen) McFarlin, and she preceded him in death on October 14, 2021. In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by a daughter, Melissa Penhorwood; a sister, Marjorie Johnson; and his brothers, John and Edward McFarlin.

He is survived by a daughter, Laura (Bill) Roth of McArthur; son-in-law, Kurt (Jenny) Penhorwood of Zanesfield; grandchildren, Brock (Kaitlyn) Penhorwood, Bryden (Stanleigh) Penhorwood, Mataya (Garrett) Reinhard, Karlie Penhorwood, Logan Roth, Nathalie (Isaiah) Higgins and Katie Thompson; great grandsons, Obadiah and Zebedee Penhorwood; a sister, Kathy (Dennis) Williams of Quincy; and numerous nieces nephews.

Services to celebrate Ernie’s life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, August 30, 2024 at The Well Church of the Nazarene 1126 N. Maple St. Marysville. Burial will follow at the East Liberty Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00 P.M. Thursday, August 29, 2024 at the church. Memorial contributions can be made to Nazarene Missionary International or Gideon’s International and envelopes will be available at the church.
