Ellen Maxine (Bump) Hammond, 84, of Bellefontaine, OH, passed away on the morning of Saturday, April 27, 2024, at her home, following a stay at the OSU Ross Heart Hospital.
Ellen was born on May 5, 1939, to Carroll Lee and Thelma Pearl (Bodey) Bump in Champaign County, Ohio. She was the second child of seven. On June 22, 1961, she married the love of her life, Eugene “Gene” Hammond, with whom she shared 53 years of marriage.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene “Gene” Hammond, her parents Carroll and Thelma (Bodey) Bump, and her brothers John and Bruce Bump.
Ellen is survived by her children: William Douglas (Lori) Hammond, Bryan, OH, Jeanine (Steve) Fansler, Huntsville, and Jenifer Hammond Somerlot, Zanesfield; grandchildren: Mason (Olivia) Hammond, Jessica Hammond, Lauren, Lucy, and Cole Somerlot, Kylie and Courtney Fansler, Mark (Karrie) Fansler, and Craig (Jenny) Fansler; six great-grandchildren; siblings: Carole Bump Wilson, Bellefontaine, Jim (Sue) Bump, Urbana, Marion (Karen) Bump, Richwood, and Wayne (Cher) Bump, Dublin; and her friend, Vincent Bailey, Urbana. Ellen also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends she considered family.
Ellen graduated from Triad High School in 1957. She had a fulfilling career as a nurse, working for Doctors Morrow and Nixon in Bellefontaine, in the OR at Mary Rutan Hospital and the Ohio State University Hospital, and for the Logan County Sheriff. Her volunteer work included Operation Smile, Mary Rutan Hospital Guild, Weekday Religious Education, and teaching Sunday School at the First United Methodist Church in Bellefontaine, and a 4-H Advisor. Ellen was also actively involved in various community groups, including United Methodist Women, the Order of Eastern Star, Kings Daughters, Hill and Valley, Bellefontaine Community Concert Band, and the Senior Citizens Choir. In her leisure time, Ellen loved to sew, knit, read, garden, travel, play the clarinet and dulcimer, and spend time with her family.
Pastor Wayne Downing will officiate a funeral service 11 a.m. Monday, May 13, at Jennings Farley & Seeley Funeral Home and Crematory, 5591 S. U.S. Highway 68, West Liberty, Ohio 43357. Visitation will be Sunday, May 12, at the funeral home from 2 to 5 p.m.
