A routine traffic stop for a burned-out headlight led to a drug-related arrest early Sunday, Feb. 9 in the area of State Route 117 near State Route 274.
Brandy Simmons, 32, of Urbana, was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia and was lodged in the Logan County Jail.
Deputies from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office at approximately 3:29 a.m. observed a maroon Ford Focus traveling northbound along S.R. 117 in the area of S.R. 274 with an inoperable driver-side headlight. The deputy initiated a traffic stop near County Road 36 and made contact with Simmons.
During the stop, Simmons reportedly was nervous and showed physical signs consistent with drug use. A records check revealed prior drug-related offenses, and she reported to deputies that she had open narcotics cases in Logan County.
Simmons declined consent for a vehicle search, and so K9 Tega was called to the scene. The K9 unit alerted to the presence of narcotics, prompting a search of the vehicle. Under the driver’s seat deputies found a green zip-up bag containing a glass pipe with burned white residue and a metal filter commonly used for smoking crack cocaine.
The vehicle was towed, and Simmons was transported to the Logan County Jail without incident. She was also issued a warning for the equipment violation.
