Jason B. Vest, 32, of Wapakoneta, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs related to a traffic stop just before noon Saturday, April 1.

Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office received a report about a reckless driver on eastbound U.S. Route 33 near County Road 87. The caller stated that the jeep couldn’t maintain its lane.

Deputies located the jeep still eastbound on U.S. 33 approaching Wilgus Drive and also observed erratic driving. A traffic stop was initiated.

Deputies noticed a female passenger visibly shaking and holding her chest, and they believed she was having a medical emergency, so they called for a squad. She later declined EMS attention, but said she was scared because of how Vest was driving the vehicle. She stated she asked him to stop the vehicle, but he wouldn’t, and said he was screaming at her repeatedly while they were driving.

Deputies were informed that Vest had a warrant for his arrest. He was asked to exit the vehicle and they conducted a pat down search of his person. He then began resisting deputies’ efforts to place him under arrest.

The defendant started to become combative with deputies, attempting to fight them. Deputies deployed a Taser on him and were able to gain control of Vest. Indian Lake EMS responded to the scene and removed the Taser probes from him.

K9 Thor was deployed on the defendant’s jeep, and the dog alerted on the vehicle. A probable cause search was conducted, which did not yield any illegal contraband.

Vest was placed under arrest and transported to the Logan County Jail. Deputies noted that he had another recent charge of resisting arrest and criminal trespassing March 22 in Wapakoneta.

Semi strikes low-lying electric lines

Deputies responded to a report of a semi-tractor trailer striking low-lying electric lines shortly after 1 p.m. Friday, March 31, at 427 Miami St., in Miami Township.

Deputies report Donald L. Hobbs, 52, of St. Paris, was operating a westbound semi and pulled off the road to utilize a truck pull-off area to check trailer equipment. The semi then struck the low-lying electric lines on a utility pole that is inactive.

Damage was light to the semi and no citations were issued. AES Ohio was contacted and representatives stated that the pole had been damaged previously and there was a work order to remove it.
