Sweetheart cards are OK until the sentiment wears thin as the syrupy language in them gets thick. And the bloom fades on flowers.
But real Valentine’s Day aficionados know there is something much better than cards or roses that can truly tap into the spirit of the lovers’ holiday.
Chocolate.
To that end and with Valentine’s Day but one week away, the Bellefontaine Downtown Partnership, with a big boost from sponsors City Sweets & Creamery and Queen of Hearts Fine Chocolates & Gifts, conducted its annual Chocolate Walk in downtown Bellefontaine Friday evening.
Twenty-two businesses were supplied with different goodies from City Sweets and Queen of Hearts, with an assist from One-Eyed Cookie Lab. Those holding the ducats – all 150 of the $25 tickets available were sold – were issued a user-friendly map and box, then sent out in search of the businesses that were possessed of the chocolate luxuries, issuing them one at a time as small bands of box-holding chocoholics wound their way around downtown.

And we’re not talking dollar-store grab bag treats here, either. Think Double Chocolate Cake Pops from City Sweets. DeBrand Caramels from Queen of Hearts. Puppy Chow from The One-Eyed Lab. Plus 18 more morsels, each one as delicious than the last, perhaps even more so.
Proceeds from the Chocolate Walk went to the organizers, the Bellefontaine Downtown Partnership, a 501(c)3 organization.
Maddie Stotler, coodinator for the Bellefontaine Downtown Partnership, said that its mission is to promote a healthy and vibrant downtown scene, noting that a goal of the Partnership is to one day be financially secure enough to promote and sponsor the Chocolate Walk – as well as other activities throughout the year – free of charge.
But no one was complaining about the $25 price tag Friday, as those who visited all 22 businesses came away with a box full of chocolate Valentine goodness that weighed in at about two pounds, and that’s after the half-pound or so that was consumed along the way.
The Valentine’s Day fun for the Bellefontaine Downtown Partnership doesn’t end with the Chocolate Walk. The Partnership has “Galentine’s Night Out” coming up Thursday, Feb. 13, from 4 to 8 p.m.
