City reminds residents to clear sidewalks after snow, ice

A little shoveling can go a long way, especially when kids are walking to school and neighbors are out with their dogs, as city officials encourage Bellefontaine property owners to clear snow- and ice-covered sidewalks.

City officials say many sidewalks throughout the community remain covered following recent winter weather, creating unsafe conditions for students heading to school and bus stops, as well as for residents who rely on sidewalks for daily travel.

Under city ordinance, property owners, occupants, or those responsible for maintaining property are required to keep sidewalks adjacent to their property in a safe and passable condition.

City code section 1406.04 requires sidewalks, walkways, stairs, driveways, parking areas, and similar spaces to be maintained free from hazardous conditions. Section 1406.05 specifically addresses winter weather, requiring snow to be removed from sidewalks within four hours after daylight following a snowfall.

When sidewalks are covered with ice, the ordinance requires property owners to make them safe and passable by removing the ice or applying sand, salt, or other suitable materials.

Officials emphasized that uncleared sidewalks can create particular challenges for children walking to school, families with strollers, older residents, and others with mobility concerns.

Residents who have already cleared their sidewalks are thanked for their efforts. Those who may be unable to shovel due to age, health, or other limitations are encouraged to seek assistance, and neighbors who are able are asked to consider lending a hand.
