Cold temps and sleeting rain didn’t stop the Clauses and a few of their elves from showing up in Bellefontaine on Saturday, Nov. 23, to inspect the new Santa shed, which sits in front of the courthouse on Main Street.

To get the downtown holiday merriment started, Santa took care of the ribbon-cutting ceremony for what’s sure to be a cozy home-away-from-the-North-Pole for the next five weekends, continuing through Dec. 22.

Saturday’s grand opening, which also included free hot chocolate and cookies, kicks off a month of events proving Bellefontaine is Ohio’s Christmas capital.

“This year, our team has gone above and beyond to make Downtown Bellefontaine a true winter wonderland,” said Andrea Wrocklage, president of the Downtown Bellefontaine Partnership and a longtime downtown retailer.

“We’re incredibly proud of the way our small businesses, community organizations, and local talent have come together to make the downtown an experience like no other. This season, we invite everyone to discover the magic here and see why Bellefontaine truly shines during the holidays.”

Monday, Nov. 25, Bellefontaine Mayor David Crissman also joined in the holiday spirit by issuing a proclamation for the festivities.

“Whereas the city of Bellefontaine is the highest point in the state, probably standing as a pinnacle of Ohio’s landscape.

“And whereas Bellefontaine is historically rich and vibrant community with roots dating back to its role as a former radar base during the Cold War, was used to track Santa’s journey around the world, adding a touch of holiday magic to its legacy.

“Bellefontaine’s unique location and warm hearted spirit have made it a beloved destination, especially during the holiday season, where it’s festive atmosphere, charming shops and inviting streets make it an exceptional place to visit and enjoy the magic of Christmas.”

Along with Santa’s appearances each weekend downtown, the annual hometown Christmas parade is set for Friday evening, Dec. 6, along with holiday-themed performances at the Holland Theatre, and other festive family fun.
