It was another impressive day Tuesday for Bellefontaine’s boys tennis team.
The Chiefs, who won a share of the Central Buckeye Conference title earlier this week, competed in the Division II sectional tournament at Troy and qualified three of their members for next week’s district tourney.
Moving on for the Chiefs are Truman Howell in singles and Drew Phillips and Trey Taylor in doubles.
This is the first group of Chieftain boys to qualify for the districts since Robbie Ball in 2010.
They will compete in seeding matches Saturday in Troy and the district competition will be next Thursday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.
Phillips and Taylor also made school history Tuesday as they set a new BHS record for doubles wins in a season. They are currently sitting at 22 wins.
Phillips and Taylor defeated Courtad and Lins from Lehman Catholic 6-0, 6-1 and they beat Baugh and Gundolf of Northwestern 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
Phillips and Taylor face the team of Iddings and Kress of Milton-Union in a qualifying match Saturday.
Howell opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Keegan Clay of Urbana and he followed with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Mason Grudick of Milton-Union and a 6-0, 6-0 win over Mason Middlestetter of Greenville.
Howell will face Mason Pierri of Greenville in a qualifying match Saturday.
Bellefontaine’s other doubles team of Elias Abrego and Bryce Harris was defeated by Northwestern’s Kyle Macy and Harleigh Schuerman 7-5, 6-0.
In singles play, Bellefontaine’s Xavier Sims earned a pair of wins before falling in his third match.
Sims defeated Sophia Kochensparger of Eaton 6-2, 6-1 and Braden Schauer of Milton-Union 6-0, 6-0. He then lost to Mason Pierri of Greenville 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.
The Chiefs’ Max Fissel also participated in the singles bracket. He was defeated by Brayden Spriggs of Urbana 7-5, 6-4.
