Brunswick offers insight on prep baseball in ‘Inside Pitch’ article

Longtime former Bellefontaine baseball coach Mark Brunswick authored an article titled “Our Next Assignment” in the most recent bi-monthly issue of Inside Pitch, sharing his concerns and hopes for the sport at the prep level.

The article draws on Brunswick’s nearly three decades of experience as a head coach, including 22 seasons leading the Bellefontaine High School baseball program. Across coaching stops at Bellefontaine, Marysville and Lehman Catholic, his teams compiled a 502-165 spring record, captured 10 league championships, made 12 district tournament appearances, advanced to five regional tournaments and reached the state Final Four in 2004 and 2006.

Inside Pitch serves as the official magazine of the American Baseball Coaches Association and features instruction, analysis and commentary from coaches at all levels of the game.

In addition to his coaching résumé, the article reflects Brunswick’s perspective as a husband, father and mentor whose life has been closely tied to school athletics and community. According to the piece, those personal roles shaped how he approached coaching, reinforcing the belief that protecting young athletes’ long-term health and well-being is as important as competitive success.

Within that context, Brunswick outlines his concern over the increasing emphasis on pitching velocity in high school baseball. He notes that the pursuit of radar-gun numbers, year-round competition and showcase exposure has contributed to a rise in arm injuries among young pitchers. He stresses the importance of proper mechanics, monitored workloads and recovery — principles he consistently emphasized throughout his career.

The article also reflects Brunswick’s long-standing commitment to development beyond wins and losses. During his coaching career, 73 of his players advanced to the college level, while many others earned academic and athletic honors, underscoring an approach centered on preparation, accountability and long-term growth.

Brunswick’s perspective is one shaped by decades in the dugout and a lifetime connected to the game, adding an experienced voice to the ongoing discussion about the future and sustainability of prep baseball.
